Course Descriptions/Supply Lists

Listed below are the various classes we offer at The Studio Art Center. These are our main classes but we reserve the right to add other topics and workshops,etc at our discretion. Also included below are the supply lists for each class....please bring all materials to class the first night so you can make the best use of your time. Handbuilding Techniques for Clay Sculpture

In this three week course the student will learn the techniques of handbuilding with air dried clay. It is an ancient method used by the indians to make pottery and other vessels for daily use. The student will leave being able to work at home not needing a kiln or other sophisticated equipment to continue working and will know how to make round and square objects. Topics covered include the coil method where a bowl will be made....the slab method where a square box will be made and finally a class where a basket using slabs can be made or the student can work independently on a project they decide upon themselves.

 

Supply List:

 

​*One 20lb box air dried clay from Artist and Craftsmen ( make sure it is soft or it will be unworkable) *one box trash bags ( dollar store)* one spray bottle for water( dollar store)* one empty glass bottle or rolling pin * one large sharp knife for cutting clay * one set of pottery tools ( or a fork, knife and spoon) * one sponge for clay ( or regular sponge dollar store) * one ceramic plate or lazy susan for turning work on *

 

 

 

 

Art in the Park/Beach

Art in the Park iis an art course that involves meeting in outdoor settings around Charleston SC. The duration of the course might be affected by weather conditions but TSAC will ensure that you get the 4-5 classes you paid for (depends on month some months only have 4 weeks). Make art outdoors in the best natural conditions like the Great Masters....we will paint, do oil pastels,etc. Depends on the current course offerings as to what medium we will use. An easel is not necessary but is helpful. You can always paint in your lap if desired.

   All classes are 3-5 weeks and most will end with an alfresco or outdoor class if applicable/desirable option.  $25 covers the cost of one class but not materials except in childrens classes. Students are expected to bring materials the first night of class to make best use of their time. The Studio Art Center is not liable for any injury sustained during the class or for personal items left/stolen on the various properties where classes are held..

All levels Acrylic Painting

This is a 4-5 week class that will end with an alfresco or outdoor painting session in a park or natural setting if desirable option to the students. The participants will bring in and loosely draw images they choose and then paint and Mrs Pidgeon will go around the room and assist participants during a 2 hour class that will teach them about painting with acrylic paint and all the variables that includes. It is a class for all levels so that from the beginner to the expert,  or anyone who just wants a regular time to paint with other artists will be given assistance with the painting they choose.

 

Supply List:

 

* One canvas/canvasboard/canvas sheet....any size is fine * gesso ( optional....if canvas is primed not necessary) * one jar for water * one pencil for drawing image * one magazine or photography image that is not complicated and can be loosely drawn and is clearly visible* at least three brushes ( small for detail, medium for areas such as sky,etc and large ( 1-2 inches) for washes in the beginning and for larger areas.....can get as many or as few as budget allows. I recommend flats and rounds but any art store should be able to help you pick some decent brushes out. Make sure they say for Acrylic Paint * one spray bottle ( dollar store or walmart) * one roll paper towels * one tabletop easel ( optional) * some acrylic paint....a kit is fine or at least a red/yellow/blue/white/black so can make all the other colors....can also buy additional some browns and greens as these are hard to mix. * a pallette ( or pie plate is fine) * tin foil

Photography

This 4 week course will cover the various elements of photography such as foreground/background, composition, tonal variation, perspective, pattern/ texture and subject matter,etc. This is not a technical class for how cameras work. That will be covered in another more advanced class. This class is how to take a better photograph and how to develop your photographic eye. The final class we will take pics in an outdoor setting together as a group. Every week a topic will be discussed such as pattern/texture and an assignment given in reference to that topic then compared with other students work the next week.

Supplies: camera, notebook and developing costs.
